Another huge milestone for Devil Ark! 22 Tasmanian Devils bred in the Barrington Tops left Scone airport at 10am today to be released into a disease-free area of Tasmania.
This will be the first group from Devil Ark to be release into this area, in an attempt to increase genetic diversity and bring the species back from the brink.
In just four years Devil Ark has gone from 44 devils to over 150, in part because the habitat and climate of Barrington Tops is similar to Tasmania.
Devil Ark’s ambitious breeding program might be the key to its survival. Located at an altitude of 1,350 metres in the Barrington Tops, Devil Ark provides the perfect breeding environment for devils. The Tasmanian-like vegetation and cool, wet and snowy conditions means the devils feel right at home!
Devil Ark host "Devils in the Wild" tours monthly throughout the year in the Barrington Tops. The tour is fully escorted by a Devil Ark supervisor and runs for 2.5 hours.
The tour starts off with introduction of the project and the Tasmanian devil over morning tea at the Interpretation Centre. The tour will then take you on a journey where you will see the devils in the free-range enclosures. You will be privy to enter a huge free-range enclosure and experience a rare opportunity to really get up close and personal in the devil’s natural enclosure to witness a communal feed to encourage wild behavior. Finally, you will even get the chance to hold and interact with the Ambassador joeys, Diva and Levi who were born at Devil Ark earlier this year.
Devil Ark is 2 hours away from Scone, 4 hours from Newcastle and 6 hours from Sydney.
The Devils in the Wild Tour costs $150 for adults and $100 for children between the ages of 8-15 years old.
Tours are capped at 12 people. Visit http://www.devilark.org.au/devil-ark-tours/ to book.
