Centenary of Beersheba Day at Murrurundi

Commemorating the charge of 800 Australian troops and horses into gunfire at the Battle of Beersheba.

For 23 years an Upper Hunter town has held a commemoration to honour their efforts.

The Murrurundi Troop of the 12th Light Horse remember the courage of those who helped change the course of WW1 in the Middle East.

They honour not just the troops - many of whom were stockmen, drovers, farmers and station hands who had enlisted - but also the horses. They had embarked together to a foreign land. After years of war, of cold and searing heat, the horses carrying everything needed for fighting and living, their bond must have seemed unbreakable. But the joy of going home in 1919 was blunted by a heart-breaking quarantine decision and the horses were left behind.

All are welcome to attend.
